Getting around Croatia

A sensible route matters more than the number of pins on your map.

By car

A car is useful for inland Istria, rural stays and routes with several small stops. In historic centres it can become a parking problem. Ask your accommodation where you can actually leave it.

By ferry or catamaran

Check port names, travel dates and whether the service carries vehicles. Some lines are seasonal. Use the operator’s current timetable and leave a buffer between a boat and a flight.

By bus & rail

Buses connect many coastal destinations. Rail is more useful for selected mainland journeys; do not assume a coastal rail route exists. Confirm services directly before committing.

Make travel days lighter

Two nights in one place does not mean two full sightseeing days. Keep arrival and departure days simple, especially with luggage, children or an island connection.
